13 must-have traits of a successful entrepreneur

We’re all familiar with the phrase “an entrepreneurial spirit.” It refers to the traits entrepreneurs need to succeed in the face of an uphill, challenging climb that’s bound to come with unexpected twists and turns. Even with a groundbreaking, revolutionary idea, you can’t start and build a business without that underlying spirit. But are entrepreneurs born, or can they be made?

The members of Business Journals Leadership Trust include many successful entrepreneurs. Below, 13 of them share their opinions on whether entrepreneurial drive is the result of nature or nurture (or a combination thereof) and detail the must-have characteristics every entrepreneur needs to rise to the challenge of building a business from the ground up.

5. A desire for freedom

Most entrepreneurs I know consider themselves unemployable. They cherish their freedom over other things. They like to create. I don’t think entrepreneurs are born that way, though; I believe they discover this at some point in their lives.
